Coventry Evening Telegraph report February 2011

WHEN Con  was made redundant he discovered dogs really are a man's best friend - his four pet pooches were the inspiration behind his thriving dogs' hotel business.

The former LTI worker was made redundant, from the taxi maker last September after 35 years.

But he has not looked back after setting up Coventry Dogs, dog kennels with a difference.

For the 52-year-old has set up a business which is a luxury dogs' hotel, complete with an exclusive lounge for canines to enjoy and a choice of two comfy bedrooms for them to sleep i n .

With a constant flow of contented canines, Coventrydogs is already proving a hit.

Con can hardly believe how much it has grown since the business was started in November. He said: "When I was made redundant I was sad to leave all my friends at LTI but I didn't miss the early mornings and the factory work. " I'm an outdoors kind of person at heart and enjoyed walking my dogs in the mornings before work. "It was only when my daughter suggested that I work with dogs that I started to look into being a dog walker, but an advertised job was filled when I applied." Still keen to combine his love for dogs with work, Con came up with a plan to establish his own dog walking service.

It was an activity he was well used to, having walked his four dogs -Bruno, Marley, Ollie and Dolly – for years. Before he knew it his dog walking scheme expanded to include a boarding element providing an exclusive “doggy lounge" complete with rocking chair, fireplace, a radio and candles.

Demand has increased to such an extent, that Con and his wife are planning to design a second lounge for dogs. “I can honestly say that redundancy was the best thing that ever happened to me," Con added. “I feel free from factory work in the same way that I want the dogs that stay with us to feel free.

"We didn't want to put our dogs in kennels and created a home environment we’d like for our own dogs. “Dog owners have commented that it’s not kennels; it's a hotel for dogs. I'm pleased with how it’s going."

Cons wife is equally overwhelmed with its success so far. She said: “I’m pleased for Con how it's worked out.”The big message from this is redundancy does not mean the end, For Con it was a new beginning Con can do it at 52 anyone can."

Coventry Dogs offers a range Services including dog walking boarding, emergency care and feeding service.
